What is “Chewbacca (or Chewy) Mode?”
Well, to understand what Chewbacca Mode is, you have to understand what the default mode is. Normally, Hondo Ohnaka is speaking to you on the screens guiding each passenger. Each passenger has a role. There are two pilots, two gunners, and two engineers. The pilots are in charge of flying and steering the Falcon, which makes sense considering the title “pilot.” Gunners defend the Falcon by shooting down any threats, another obvious role. The engineers repair the ship as it takes more than a few hits during the mission. Hondo Ohnaka speaks English so most guests can understand.
However, in Chewbacca Mode (or Chewy Mode), Chewbacca gets angry with the passengers for damaging the Millennium Falcon – his beloved, late friend Han Solo’s ship. He hacks into the control centre and overrides Hondo Ohnaka to yell at the pilots, gunners, and engineers in Wookie, not English. This lasts for the entire duration of the ride, about five minutes long. He also occasionally appears on the video screens, where Hondo would usually speak to riders. Chewy Mode is a recent development that came with a few minor software changes to the attraction.
How Do You Unlock Chewbacca Mode?
First things first, you are going to need a group of exactly six people who want to unlock Chewy Mode on their ride. Each person in each role has to push specific buttons in a specific order, for this to work. So if you have a group smaller than six, you might not get the opportunity to do it. However, if you are a social butterfly, maybe find some strangers who would like to ride in your party and who are willing to try this out.
Secondly, it is also a good idea to ask the cast member loading you into the cockpit about it. They can help you make sure you get it right. One of the important parts about these steps is that they must be completed before the cast member hits the “okay” button on their end. So, if the cast member knows you want to try unlocking Chewy Mode, they will avoid pushing that button until you are ready and have done everything correctly.
It is extremely important that you do all of these steps correctly and in order! Otherwise, Chewbacca Mode will not work.
Unlock Chewy Mode: Step-by-Step Guide
- Left Pilot: Pull your controller all the way to the left, as far as it will go.
- Right Pilot: Pull your control lever all the way to the bottom, as far as it will go.
- Both Pilots: Hit your activate buttons; they will be blinking lights.
- Gunners and Engineers: To activate the system, first, press and hold any white button on your control panel. It doesn't matter which button you choose. Then, press the orange 'activate' button while holding the white button down. Think of the white button as the "shift" key on your computer keyboard. It's best to keep holding the white button while pressing the orange button.
How do you know if it worked?
In default “Hondo Mode,” you will hear Hondo speaking to you as soon as the ride starts and you may hear Chewbacca once or twice as well. However, if you have correctly unlocked Chewy Mode, you will never hear Hondo Ohnaka speak at all. You will only hear Chewbacca’s angry yells. After that, it will be just the six of you and the famous Chewy.
Tips:
- Do not overthink it. It is really simple, especially if you ask for help.
- Ask for help from the loading dock cast member. They know what to do and might even walk you all the way through it.
- Make sure everyone in your group wants to unlock Chewbacca Mode before you try doing so.
- Make sure everyone knows and understands their role for both the ride itself and the cheat code order for unlocking Chewy.
