Efteling has announced it will add The Princess and the Pea to its Fairytale Forest. The new scene – the park’s 31st fairytale – will sit on the forest edge between Vrouw Holle and the Troll King.
The classic Hans Christian Anderson tale tells the story of a young princess forced to prove her worth. After feeling a pea hidden beneath twenty mattresses, she is able to marry a lonely prince.
Construction will take place at the end of 2024, with the grand reveal of The Princess and the Pea in the Fairytale Forest in spring 2025.
The Inspiration Behind the Addition
Efteling’s Fairytale Forest is a large, wooded section of the theme park where stories by the likes of the Brothers Grimm, Hans Christian Andersen, and Charles Perrault are brought to life through animatronics and intricate buildings.
Sander de Bruijn, Head Designer and manager of the Design and Experience department, shared that he took inspiration from a sketch by Dutch artist Anton Pieck to create the new scene.
De Bruijn said, “Anton Pieck's working method and perfection are still paramount when developing new designs for the World of Efteling.” He also shared that the team used the Efteling Grand Hotel as the backdrop to create a whimsical scene that links perfectly with the tale's theme of sleep.
Efteling also shared a teaser video for the magical new scene, which you can watch below…
