Disney has recently launched a new planning device called Disney Genie, along with Genie+, and Individual Attraction Selections. These new features have been said to help the guests better optimize their time inside all four parks: Magic Kingdom Park, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. However, based on what we’ve heard thus far, it is riddled with confusion and plagued with issues!

The massive difference between Disney Genie, Genie+, and Individual Attraction Selection is free vs. money vs. more money!

All kidding aside, it is a bit hard to understand at first glance. That is why we have created a breakdown to help clarify any misconceptions.

And if it takes you more than one read, don’t worry… you are not alone. This is a brand-new feature with many moving parts!

No More FastPass+

Before we delve into Disney Genie, it is important to note that the program known as FastPass+ is no longer available.

In case you are unfamiliar with FastPass+

FastPass+ allowed guests to reserve and plan a visit in advance to parks at Walt Disney World. Reservations were available for specific attractions, events, and even fireworks.

This unique system allowed guests to make reservations in advance and change at any time.

Guests staying at an onsite Disney resort were able to make reservations up to 60 days in advance while all other guests could schedule reservations up to 30 days in advance,

Guests could make three reservations in advance for each day, and all three were required to be at the same theme park; Magic Kingdom Park, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park.

Disney FastPass+ has not been operational at Disney World since the parks reopened in July of 2020.

Disney Genie

Disney Genie is a completely free planning service that comes with the My Disney Experience App.

You pretty much tell Disney Genie what attractions you want to do while you’re in the park, what kind of things you enjoy, etc. The Genie factors in all your answers/data and spits out a personalized itinerary for you. Pretty cool, huh?

Disney Genie has the ability to share daily forecasted wait times, as well as mobile order your grub, hook you up to chat with a virtual assistant, check which walk-up waitlists are available, make advanced dining reservations for you, and more.

Plans will continuously update to help you get the most out of your day. Essentially, Genie is designed to help you plan your day and optimize your time!

Disney Genie+

Well, if the name is any indication, Disney Genie+ is akin to FastPass+. However, it will cost you $15 a day (per ticket) at Walt Disney World.

Essentially, the system grants your three wishes not found in the free service. Get it – three wishes?! Awfully clever there, Disney. Well, play!

If you shell out the cash for this paid service, you’ll be granted access to knowing when the next available time is to use various attractions’ Lightning Lanes.

Wait… What The Heck is a Lighting Lane?

So glad you asked…

A Lighting Lan is literally the re-branded version of a FastPass+ lane. And just like FastPass+, the Lightning Lane program is designed to get you on your rides faster and help you further structure your day.

You will select the next available time to use the Lightning Lane for whatever ride you want, and when your time comes, you can visit the ride and use the Lightning Lane, therefore bypassing the entire standby line.

Once you’ve ridden that ride at your assigned time, you are permitted to make another Genie+ Lightning Lane selection. You may repeat this over and over – one ride at a time – all day long!

When Can You Book Your Genie+ Lightning Lane?

While the majority of guests can purchase Genie+ in advance, you cannot make a Genie+ Lightning Lane selection until the day of your trip.

Guests can make their first Lightning Lane attraction at 7 AM on the day of their visit.
