If The Imagineering Story is any indication, it would appear that Walt Disney World creatives are never at a loss for brand-new ideas, constantly dreaming up fresh attractions or refurbing old familiar favourites. As of late, Disney Legend and Walt Disney Imagineer, Tony Baxter, subscribes to the latter. In fact, Baxter hopes to reimagine Journey Into Imagination at EPCOT, as well as bring to life a full-length animated film featuring Figment!
Over the years, Figment has overgone several reincarnations:
- Journey Into Imagination, March 1983 – October 1998.
- Journey Into Your Imagination, October 1999 – Fall 2001
- Journey into Imagination with Figment, June 2002 –?
There is no doubt that the character of Figment has grown in popularity over the last few years. From comic books to plushies, this loveable fellow can be found at almost any kiosk around EPCOT, dubbing him the unofficial mascot of Walt Disney World’s second gate. Heck, even the audio-animatronics inside Journey Into Imagination now dons a holiday sweater, showing off his festive side… just in time for the Festival of Holidays at EPCOT. Talk about classic Disney synergy, huh?
According to Attractions Magazine’s Brooke Geiger McDonald, Baxter was eager to discuss a redesign during a virtual VIP reception held by Walt Disney Birthplace for Walt Disney’s birthday.
“I would give anything to be called upon to rethink that and get back to the story that every human being does. There aren’t creative people and non-creative people. Everybody uses it. It’s just to what extent and I think that that was a really valuable story to tell. It is certainly not told in there now, and I would love to see it get back.”
Baxter has had his share of the pixie-dusted limelight, having been responsible for a plethora of major attractions, such as:
- Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
- The original Journey Into Imagination pavilion
- Star Tours
- Splash Mountain
- Indiana Jones Adventure: Temple of the Forbidden Eye
- Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage
Most recently, Baxter’s services have been requested as a creative advisor for the Princess and the Frog overlay of Splash Mountain.
In addition to live attraction, Baxter also expressed interest in a Figment film:
“Maybe we can even do a film. That would even be better. A full-length animated feature film starring Figment. Let’s do a kickstarter right now.”
This would not be the first time the idea of a Figment film travelled through the pipelines. In fact, in the 1980’s a series of educational cartoons were set to feature purple creation himself. It sounds like Baxter is still holding out hope!
So, with such sellability at their fingertips, along with an eager seasoned veteran at the helm, it gives one pause as to why Disney continues to leave this beloved attraction untouched.
