Walt Disney World’s Jungle Cruise

As you may recall, the opening day attraction is undergoing an update at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, showcasing new characters, scenes, and a “cohesive storyline” that will “bring more humour, wildlife and skipper heart.”

In fact, work has already started on the Walt Disney World version. Surprisingly, the attraction will remain open as it undergoes alterations, making it possible for fans to partake in an updated ride experience from one day to the next, even if that means less and not more. Fans got their first real taste of this “now you see me, now you don’t” disappearance act this week, as the Trader Sam animatronic went MIA overnight.

Disneyland’s Jungle Cruise

As for Disneyland, construction permits were filed in February and the reimagining is scheduled to be completed this year.

We could speculate that work has already begun over at the Disneyland version, leading the update to make its first “completed” appearance on the West Coast. After all, one would assume that Disneyland’s uninterrupted downtime will probably help outpace its Floridian counterpart. If so, fans of Disneyland’s Jungle Cruise may have seen the last of this Opening Day attraction in its former state.

Not The First Time for Jungle Cruise

Because it is often hard to say goodbye to classics, here is a list from Disney Wiki of previous “Major Changes” made to the beloved attraction to remind us once more that Walt was right, Disneyland will never be completed.

  • 1973 – Expansion of boathouse queue, frogs removed from Amazon River scene
  • 1986 – African Veldt is enclosed by trees to hide views of Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa
  • 1991 – Queue updates, the introduction of the Albert Awol music loop. New scripts give Trader Sam the alternate name of Chief Name
  • 1994 – Crashed Airplane scene is added.
  • 1996 – Several figures on the Lost Safari are replaced.
  • 2000 – A canopy structure is removed from the Amazon River scene for safety concerns. The queue is reconfigured for Fastpass and the boats receive a rustic makeover.
  • 2001 – Guns replaced with non-firing props after the September 11 attacks,
  • 2016 to 2017 “Crocs eating children” joke was removed after a toddler was killed by a real crocodile at the Grand Floridian Resort.
  • 2021 – New Storyline to be added at Disneyland and Disney World
